The Future of Massage

More than one-third of Americans seek out alternative therapies for treatment of mild to serious health conditions. Massage therapy is one of the top three therapies they choose, and in most cases Americans are willing to pay out of their own pockets for massage and other alternative therapies. The field of massage therapy in the United States is currently developing at an extremely rapid pace. Factors contributing to the evolution of massage therapy include:

  1. Proliferation of massage schools, and improvement in educational standards.
  2. Improvement of professional standards.
  3. Increased media attention and public education.
  4. Interest in healing modalities used in other countries and in the body-mind connection.
  5. Professionals from many fields, including health care, athletes, cosmetologists and estheticians moving into the field of massage.
  6. Increasing levels of stress-related disease
  7. Growth of holistic and wellness movements.
  8. Proliferation of resorts, spas, and day spas.
  9. Evolving medical research, documenting the efficacy of massage in promoting wellness, enhancing the healing process, and reducing disease-producing stress.

The outlook for the profession of massage in the twenty-first century is very good. Employment opportunities are increasing and for the moment wages appear to be steady. Self-employment usually requires more education, but has greater rewards as it is possible for the individual to compete with the large resorts, spas, and health clubs for clients.
